WHY THIS PAGE EXISTS

May the peace of Christ be with you, dear reader!

Look, this blog here is intended to be a grounds for what we like to call "balance" and "real masculinity." One of the greatest phrases we strive to live by is this: Life is all about balance. I, Cameron, wanted to come together with two of my best friends, the "Pauls" in a collaborative effort to write on a host of topics while focusing in on authentic Catholic masculinity. I wanted this "blog" to be a grounds to write about balance and moderation especially to men. Too much of anything isn't good, and we've all heard that. How often do we run into articles, essays, or whatever that just don't seem to be balanced or really tackle the problem of authentic, raw, break-a-tree-in-half-with-your-bare-hands masculinity? We all do, and we do frequently; especially within the realm of our most beloved Holy Catholic Church.

There are a host of other blogs and websites out there and several well known resources that we read with regularity and reverence, but, we want to reach out to the (Catholic) men about several other topics (including but not limited to) such as: authentic Catholic masculinity, Catholic fatherhood, distributism, life on the land, homesteading, education, and a plethora of other things. We need to read and learn about these things through the lens of (what should be) our focus as Catholic men.

REGARDING THE NAME OF THE BLOG

The Seasick Catholic says it all in the name. The great G.K. Chesterton said in his What's Wrong With The World, "...we are all in the same boat, but we are all seasick." I, Cameron, first came across the quote in a talk given by Bishop (then a priest) Robert Barron titled Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Lively Virtues and it has stuck with me ever since. It's the truest thing I've heard in regard to being of a fallen sinful nature, and I can certainly relate to that with every single other human being. Hey, it's no good being seasick on the journey to Heaven, but at least we're all in the same boat.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Cameron Murray

First and foremost, I am Catholic. It is the absolute centrality of my being and my identity. It's what I am, what I do, and what I (try to) live. Having said that, I'm also a fellow sinner.

Secondly, I am a husband. I'm married to a woman that I anticipate being a canonized saint. Why do I say that? Well, mostly because she's married to me (poor girl), but also because I don't know anyone else in this world who exemplifies the love of Christ quite like my wife does. She's the funniest, wittiest, most beautiful, and the holiest woman I know. Lucky for me being married to a future saint! Not so lucky for her.

Thirdly, I am a father. I have two children: a son and a daughter, and nothing has exposed more of my sinful nature than being a father. Nothing else has also opened up my eyes to the love of the Father, either.

Couple little tidbits about me:

-I'm obsessed with Spain, all things Spanish, the Spanish language, culture, cuisine (which is God's favorite food). I lived there in 2013 and mark my words, one day, I'll return. Castellano is my other language, and I teach/tutor the language on the side.

-I'm passionate for cooking and all things gastronomy. I'm always trying new dishes, wines, beers, everything. It's an awesome way to really dive into the experience of what dining really offers.

-Love all things nature: fishing, camping, hiking, bonfires, animals; all of it.

-Traveling is my jam. Love getting to know other cultures, languages, histories, and the like. It's all up my alley.

-I am an aspiring homesteader. A goal of ours is to own some land, animals, and become more self sufficient and more in tune with the land that God gave us to steward.

-I'm also an aspiring theologian and apoligist. Key word here; "aspiring."

I grew up in the country. I have many fond memories of going to my grandmothers goat farm milking and feeding goats, fishing in their rock quarry, and bailing hay with my grandfather. Perhaps the greatest influence on my life was my father's devotion to improvements to our house and my parents strong work ethic. The house I grew up in was  was under construction from about 1995 until well...probably last year.

These things have greatly shaped my life. I spent countless hours, skipping rocks, swimming in the quarry, playing in the woods with my brother and sister, and shooting things with my air rifle. We were latch-key kids and I loved it. We did all sorts of things kids shouldn't do.  It's my life's ambition to provide the same opportunities to live in the country so my kids can experience God's natural cathedral (to borrow a John Muir quote) .

I was baptized in November of 1981. I hated school growing up which is why I decided to go to a community college, public university, and a Catholic college. During those years I joined the Catholic Church in 2004. I've been married for 14 years and I have three kids. I live in rural Illinois where I spend most of my free time renovating my house, cutting trees, and installing windows and trying to maintain harmony in my home. I also enjoy hunting and kayaking when time allows which is about once a year.  I hope you enjoy this site...there will be some fun stuff on here. Cameron and Paul are no joke...they are really funny!  - AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM

Hello and God Bless,

I am so happy and feel fortunate to be asked by Cameron to help contribute to this blog.

I am just your average Midwestern cradle Catholic who is trying to live out his Faith and raise a family in a world where our Catholic Faith is anything but accepted by the mainstream culture.  I am a former seminarian, now high school Theology teacher, who is finishing up his Master’s in Theology.  I am truly blessed to have married such an incredible woman and we have two beautiful daughters.  My wife and I enjoy distance running and I continue to enjoy all playing and coaching soccer.  Oh, and scotch, I truly enjoy scotch.

This blog stems from the many conversations Cameron, Paul, and I have had concerning the challenges facing fathers hoping to be true spiritual heads of their household and wanting to raise their families with an authentic Catholic Faith.  Each time, someone would always comment about how wonderful it is to share in fraternity and be lifted up by each other, and that we wish we had more opportunity to do so.  This blog hopes to fill a similar void you may experience in your lives.  We are three sinners, flawed in our own humanity, hoping to live out the will of God in our lives and preach the Gospel every day.  We hope to inspire, but more than anything we hope to be a place where people can come to find fellowship and find solidarity with other Catholic brethren who are doing their best to live out their faith and be men of prayer and purpose.
